Irene Bermejo Bags a Silver in World Taekwondo Championships
Irene Therese Bermejo, the batch 2014 HS school salutatorian delivered the country's first medal-a silver-in the prestigious 2014 10th WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships held at the Taipei Arena in New Taipei City, Taiwan last March 23-26, 2014.
Irene clobbered Teeranart Khamnuan of Thailand in the Last 32 (9-6), Rodina Mahmoud of Egypt in the Last 16 (16-2), Mozhgan Zadimohammad of Iran in the quarterfinals (3-1) and Jeon Jin-Hee of South Korea in the semifinals (8-4). She however, bowed to eventual champion Abigail Stones of Great Britain in the finals via a close 0-1 decision.
Irene had to forego her high school graduationin favor of representing the Philippines in this competition. She is the lone winner in the Philippine ladies team who won a medal, a silver.
On the other hand, aside from being the class salutatorian, Irene also received numerous awards during the graduation ceremony in recognition of her outstanding achievements in sports, academics and in other extra-curricular activities.
